Looming: Another Alaskan Environmental Tragedy

Sat Dec 01, 2007 at 12:30:45 AM PDT

Alaska's wild salmon run each summer has to be one of the most amazing and beautiful spectacles on Earth.  From May through August millions of King, Pink, Chum, Silver, and the gorgeous (and delicious) Red/Sockeye salmon complete their life's migrations from tiny fry, out to sea for two to three years, and back to the very stream from which they emerged. The Bristol Bay watershed is home to the world's largest Sockeye salmon run, is a dominant habitat for the four other Alaskan salmon species, and hosts several of the world's most pristine and productive trout fishing streams.

Canadian company Northern Dynasty and British company Anglo American, partners in developing the "Pebble Mine" project, are seeking approval to develop the largest open-pit gold, copper, and molybdenum "mining district" in North America, and possibly the world.  If it is approved, the mine will sit directly above the headwaters of the Bristol Bay watershed.

U.S. Detention Centers are Part of Long-Term DHS Plan: "ENDGAME," Part I

Sun Sep 30, 2007 at 04:41:55 AM PDT

I recently spent some time on the web researching the Bush Doctrine and neocon (Straussian)-based policy. What I didn’t expect to find was an operational government program which targets immigrants and "potential terrorists" on a grand scale.  Never missing an opportunity for Orwellian titles, the Department of Homeland Security has named this little gem "ENDGAME."

Its goal is "the removal of all removable aliens, (including illegal economic migrants, aliens who have committed criminal acts, asylum-seekers required to be retained by law) or potential terrorists." (p. 2-11)

Can't "potential terrorist" mean, well, anybody?

There are many, many protests around the country this weekend and extending into next weekend, so if you are in an area that is hosting an event, put on your protest shoes, don the sunscreen, pump out those home made signs, and exercize your First Amendment rights while you still can.

Blogosphere's "Deepthroat" Emerges

Wed Aug 01, 2007 at 01:57:47 AM PDT

This is not a very eloquent diary, but it seems to be molto importante.

Found on Democratic Underground a reference to a blogger on TPMMuckrakers that is deep-throat-esque, and has sensitive information regarding Bush and Co.'s lies and obfuscation of FISA, TSP, NSA, and warrantless wiretapping investigation.

Saudi Arabia Tells U.S.: Don't Leave Iraq "Uninvited"

Tue Jul 17, 2007 at 11:43:56 AM PDT

After reading two great diaries, Volvo Liberal's "Shocker: Most Foreign Militants in Iraq are from SAUDI ARABIA"" and deepsouthdoug's "Cheney--Winning Debate on War With Iran" I'll piggyback with info accumulated for awhile.

While the Bush administration contorts itself around the evidence of failure in Iraq (or stands stiffly in the face of it), what is becoming clear is that "our" purposes are not just "ours" at all.  In fact, we remain in Iraq not only for the oil, but we remain there because the House of Saud has ordered us to stay until the Iraqi Sunni minority regains power.  It is also a fact, that Saudi Arabia demands we not engage diplomatically with Iran. Being good Saudi apologists and friends, the Cheney/Bush White House is more than happy to comply.

Resurrecting the Bush (Huge) Land-Acquisition-in-Paraguay Story

Fri Apr 27, 2007 at 11:54:04 PM PDT

The other day someone posted a one-liner (sorry, but can't remember where I saw it here) about the Bush family buying a hefty parcel of land in Paraguay. That got the investigative juices flowing; several hours later the story keeps twisting and turning, like floating down a lazy dark Amazonian river--in fact, this is a humdinger. This is hardly an original topic, as Wonkette did some excellent blogging about it on October 18, 2006, but research presented additional food-for-thought. I thought in light of accellerating GOP corruption and scandals, it was probably a good idea to go ahead and resurrect the story.

Why would Bush want to live in Paraguay, you ask? Well, turns out it could be for a couple of very good reasons.

Dan Rather:  Al Gore will run, he's on a diet

Sun Apr 08, 2007 at 05:03:13 PM PDT

I really should be studying, but saw this on Democratic Underground, and then I went to google Chris Matthews, on whose show Rather made the comments and saw the comments there.  I haven't actually seen the Matthews segment, a disclaimer.

BUT, it is really exciting to me that it's being discussed, even on Matthews, cringe, and that Dan Rather weighed in.  Sorry, could't resist

GOP Freefall

Fri Apr 06, 2007 at 04:10:17 PM PDT

Times they are a changin'.  Corruption and hypocricy within th Bush WH and the GOP has reached such a fever pitch in the last month that even the minion mainstream media can't ignore it. Time Magazine, the last bastion of dig-your-feet-in-conservative-blind-loyalty, will publish an editorial entitled, "Bush Clearly Unfit to Lead" in the coming days.

It's interesting to watch an arrogant and bullying person, or in this case, group of people, begin the spiral downward to which there is no return.  There is a certain morbid curiosity that is involved, a transfixed detatchment, even guilt mixed in with glee.

Events of the past few weeks in the Bush docudrama have certainly veered the Bush administration and GOP from steady downward projection to outright freefall.
